How Porcelain Insulators Work:
An insulator’s primary function is to stop electric current from traveling in unexpected directions. This is accomplished by porcelain insulators through:
High Dielectric Strength: Porcelain can tolerate a high electric field without disintegrating and letting current flow through because of its exceptionally high dielectric strength. In order to isolate high-voltage conductors, this is essential.
High Insulation Resistance: By providing a very high electrical resistance, it successfully reduces leakage currents from the live conductor to the ground potential support structure (pole or tower).
Creepage Distance: The distinctive umbrella-like shapes known as “sheds” or “skirts” are frequently used in the construction of porcelain insulators. The creepage distance, or surface leakage path, is widened by these sheds. In unclean or humid surroundings, a greater creepage distance prevents flashovers by making it harder for pollutants and moisture to create a continuous conductive path.
Mechanical Strength: In addition to offering electrical isolation, insulators must be able to sustain the weight and strain of the conductors above them mechanically. They must also be able to tolerate vibrations, wind loads, and ice loads. Because of its natural compressive strength and hardness, porcelain can withstand these mechanical forces.
Chemical and Thermal Stability: Porcelain is resistant to deterioration from environmental elements such as UV rays, chemicals, and pollutants since it is chemically inert and has good thermal stability, which means it maintains its qualities across a broad temperature range.
