Chemical Earthing, Installation, Material List & How it Works?

Chemical earthing is a modern and growingly favored technique for grounding electrical systems. In contrast to conventional earthing methods that depend on salt and charcoal, chemical earthing employs uniquely engineered electrodes and conductive chemical substances to establish a low-resistance route for fault currents to flow into the ground. This approach offers improved safety, extended durability, and reduced maintenance. Chemical earthing offers numerous advantages over traditional methods, making it the favored option for modern electrical installations:

  • Enhanced Safety: It provides a consistent channel for fault currents and lightning strikes, lowering the risk of electric shock and equipment damage.
  • Low Maintenance: Because the unique compound maintains moisture, the system requires almost no maintenance and provides consistent performance throughout time.
  • Corrosion Resistance: The compound protects the electrode from corrosion, which extends the system’s life.
  • Superior Performance: It establishes a secure, low-resistance connection even in dry, rocky, or sandy soils where other methods fail.

How Chemical Earthing Works ?

Chemical earthing is a fundamental part of modern electrical safety, particularly for protecting structures and equipment from faults and surges caused by lightning strikes. Here’s how it works, step by step:

Steps 1: A metal electrode, usually a copper-bonded rod, is inserted vertically into a hole excavated in the earth.

Steps 2: The trench is subsequently filled with a non-corrosive, conductive substance (usually a combination of bentonite and graphite). This chemical was designed to absorb and retain moisture from the surrounding soil.

Steps 3: Moisture causes the compound to swell, resulting in a large, uniform, and low-resistance contact surface between the electrode and the ground.

Steps 4: When an electrical fault or a lightning strike occurs, the excess current flows down the electrode and dissipates into the ground via the highly conductive material. This mechanism properly dissipates the electricity, shielding people and equipment from danger.

The primary advantage is that the compound ensures a stable and low-resistance path to the ground regardless of the soil’s natural resistivity or moisture content, making it far more reliable than traditional earthing methods that rely on salt and charcoal.
