Setting Up and Measuring:
One essential component of a lightning protection system that must adhere to tight regulations is the placement of down conductors.
- Sizing: The class of the LPS, which is based on a risk assessment, determines the conductor’s size (cross-sectional area). Minimum sizes for various materials are specified by international standards to guarantee that they can withstand the possible lightning current without suffering damage. For instance, a copper conductor typically has a minimum cross-section of 50 mm².
- Spacing: A structure usually has several down conductors installed on it, spaced out around the perimeter at predetermined intervals. The LPS class determines the spacing distance (10m to 20m for higher levels of protection, for example). In general, each structure must have at least two down conductors.
- Placement: Down conductors should be routed as straight as possible and are placed on the outside of the structure, preferably at the exposed corners. Using specialized clamps, they should be firmly fastened to the structure at regular intervals (e.g., per meter).
- Connection: The down conductor needs to be connected to the earth termination system at the bottom and the air termination system at the top in a safe, low-resistance manner. To make disconnecting and testing the earth resistance simple, a control joint is frequently placed at the base. In order to shield the down conductor from mechanical harm, a protective tube is also positioned at ground level, up to a distance of two meters.
